Dougie will be able to give you a better more acurate price as he has just had his van converted.

the 1.9td is cheaper to insure than the 2.5td as it can be insured on car insurance, I found this out with my van But if your converting it to a camper or it is already a camper then ins wont be a problem as it should be cheaper anyway.

I found this out the hard way as I want a custom van & not a camper.

the 1.9td can have a 5th gear upgrade to drop the revs & gain a better top speed to keep up with the rest.

Indeed Ditto what Rob says above i would only add that if going for a Hig top get a 2.5tdi to start with as the wind resistance will make it terribly slow which is why we changed our minds and went for a pop top, which is far more practical anyway, in many ways if more expensive Ray on here fits High tops at about £600 btw [i think dont quote me though as that was a few years ago i enquired, an price update Ray if your reading this would be great pls]

Depends if your willing to travel and where you live but a Pop top can be obtained way cheaper than £3k [fitted proffesionally] if you know where to go, i wouldn't advise doing it yourself unless you are very proficient at both cutting & welding as it's not just a simple case of cutting a great big hole out the roof and fitting a pop top, it's way more complex than that as you are taking all the rigidity out of the shell in much the same way as if you had a rag top fitted it really isn't an amatuers job.....

Hi Rich and welcome to the forum. Don't think there's much in it really. If you like the sound of truck engines then go for a 2.5. Nice sound. Insurance is pretty similar for both. A 1.9 as long as it's a TD should do most stuff competently and keeping it up and running is a simple job. They can take the weight without too much loss in performance and will punt you and yours round the country all day and every day. With the 5th gear done they will keep up on the motorway too but if you need to do frequent long motorway trips at 80 plus, the 2.5 is the one to have. Fuel economy is similar for both, 600 miles average for a tank of diesel.
Ultimate here in Birmingham have quoted me between 3.2k and 3.5k for a pop top depending on spec. That is the price of a van, so I would choose wisely if you are going to invest in one and make it a good one to start with.

Try https://www.hertsinsurance.com/vwcampers.php
They will cover work in progress items too. When I asked about the high roof they just said call us when it's done and the policy would be amended to suit.
Also Adrian Flux does a similar policy but I have no experience of these.

Ditto Herts as i use them to always have and i make use of their £12.95 extra gaurenteed value certificate system whereby of that amount and a few images aand details they will insure it at a guarenteed value set by you so if the worst happens you are insured for its real value [i.e what you spent.....] Whatever company you use ensure they know what your doing/have done and that IT IS A SPECIALIST COMPANY dealing with custom/motorhomes as a VAN insuranc ecompany simply will not do.....

In any case with any company keep ALL receipts from build as they will be needed later should anything happen also to prove its a Motor caravan a MUST if any claim is to be successfull you will need to get its V5 re-classed from van - motor home just got my V5 back today so about to embark upon this chore very very shortly
