Hi looking for a VW T4 SWB with tail gate, pref late version, although would consider most tidy mechanically wise, not massively fussed about the body work as long as its not a rust bucket, but must have a good engine, without hundreds of k's milage, ideally three seats in the front, 1.9 or 2.5 varients, not 2.4d .. and would like it to have had the cambelt done fairly recently, i.e. dont want to be spending the money out, to then go and get the cambelt done straight away.

Was thinking of spending 1-2kish for one as a project campervan...

Anyone know of any potentials? surprised

Could be a winner, tested but needs a starter motor fitting.

£1 -2K i fear is wishfull thinking bro try 3-4 and you will be closer

T4's seem to be overtaking T5s just now just like T3's overtook T4's for a long while crazy yet true i am currently seeing a T5 [pi think] and can buy a newer lower mileage T5 for same money as a 100K + T4 but keep looking the right van is out there just be willing to both travel and lower your expectaions high mileages with these vans is not an issue as much as in other makes i personally know of several well 400k + and still going strong they keep their values as they now also have a cult following like ever Transporter before them at 2k your looking at a 100k odd prob 1998 - 99 poss 2000 model in med condition im afraid odd bargains about but better to spend max and get the best you can, it has always worked for me doing it that way.....be careful loads of cons out there right now as conmen have cottoned on to how popular these vehicles actually are and are moving in with several scams if unsure about any you might wish to look at post details and we will happily appraise for you

Good luck, keep looking and it will come alonmg maybe not today, maybe not toimmorow took me 3 months + on my two T4 hunts and im only a week into my T5 hunt

thanks for the info,

After having driven a very nice Caravelle in Ipswich a couple of weeks ago (80K on the clock, full works in side, 2.5tdi, S-reg) and now tonite driven a 1.9D N reg Van, carpetted, but in need of a respray and finishing off, I have decided that its best to wait it out and go for the best i can get... The Caravelle ended up selling on ebay for 6.6k, so think that 4-5k is prob where i need to be heading....

I also missed a VW T4 autosleeper at the weekend (BY one day!) only 1.9d though, but reckoned that would have been the perfect start at 4.5k

Thanks, and yes going to keep looking, (fingers crossed for a good bonus in Jan!)

It makes sense buddy as otherwise you are simply buying into someone elses problems the only thing i could add really is to try and not be swayed by big alloys, fancy bits all over and it being lowered [my pet hate] far better to by a standard van and diy then you know how its been done...... if your not able to maintain and repair it yourself then i would stay away from the rather more expensive 2.5's [to many electrics in them although more tuneable but also more prone to problems as well]

Ps the 1.9 is very very slow and untunable best with eith a 1.9td or even the rather agriculktural 2.4 is a good all round engine with enough power to keep you moving a straight 1.9 would be like driving an old bay in the slow lane always up and down the box constantly.

Anything else just ask buddy we are here to help, give honest non biast opinions and do frequently, be ready to travel to wherever when the price is right and do not part with any money until you are in front of the van loads uponlaods of scams out there... [600 mile round trip to get my first one and had not really any issues with it and doubtless will have to do it all again so factot travel into the budget also i did]

Hmmm, Yes thinking of the 1.9Tdi as well, I need to drive one and try it out..but must be a manual, no auto boxes! I do feel its going to be a long hunt, At least I will still be driving my V6 Audi coupe for a while yet.

oh and havent really been looking at ones with Flashy Alloys on it, The main things I am looking for are mechanically sound, no Auto boxes, may need a respray or some body work tarting up.

Alloys I can add after wards, along with lowering if i so wish!

There is not a 1.9tdi ?? its a 1.9td unless retrofitted stay well clear would be what i would say to that buddy ..... unless pro fitted with receipts etc for all conversion works done

All original fitted VW T4 engines are listed below beware 1.9tdi will of been out of a Golf, i would be very wary of these as not intended for T4's imho i would rather have a factory spec vehicle

Note -
Also whatever you buy in the end unless it has a full indisputable service history allow £400-£500 to get as soon as you get it a full timingbelt/waterpump and tensioner sevice done on it i always do and have yet to be let down by one well worth it then regularily service it and you will have a very dependable motor for many years to come i service all mine at 30k for all oils, 50k timing belts etc and have NEVER had a problem maintenance is the key with these vehicles without a doubt, always remember they were mostly at one time working vans often driven my morons who just didnt care it wasnt theres simple

Sadly as we have said many many times before the T4's are a casualty of their own success where there are vehicles about cheap but most now know they can and do easily attract a scene tax thus they can be rather expensive hence best to buy a straight plain van and do yer own thing to it rather than have a case of someone else built it and juts making do as we did........ Now finding our key and very useable machine we are very happy, obviously a newer model would be nice but hey comfort, ease of use and with all the things mine has im happy...
