Hi
Whats the problem with the box have you lost any more gears or just 5Th????? As you might not need to remove the box to replace the 5Th gear set.
If I can have the year engine and box code I can have a look on my Tech stuff and point you in the right direction of how to repair it and any special tool you might need.
Gearbox parts are dear all ways have been for all makes not just VW
I have just rebuilt an M32 box out of an astra you cant buy ANY bits from GM for that box.

Yes there is a special tool for doing the job
Get your self one its not worth ripping your hands to bits and taking all day to put them on.
I got mine from snap on but there cheeper options out there
